Tyn Church is an icon of Prague. Its gothic towers dominate the Old Town Square and there’s lots to see inside too. It’s full name is the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn and it was founded in the late 1300’s, replacing a larger structure on this site. Construction took over a century and the two towers were the final pieces of the jigsaw. The towers are named Adam & Eve. From the outside, take a look at the towers closely and you will see that they’re not identical. Make sure you return to the square at night to see the towers lit up too.
In 1679, a large fire severely damaged the church and significant rebuilding was needed. As such the building that you see today has some parts which are older than others. Inside the Tyn church, you will find three min aisles and the gothic style continues. The main altar is surrounded by paintings and you’ll find gothic features dotted around the other 18 altars. The church organ is highly decorated too. Your visit will not take long, but its defientely worth taking the time to look inside the Tyn church in order to get a real feel for the place.
The Church of Our Lady Before Tyn is usually open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm, and between 3pm and 5pm. If you can’t get inside, we’d recommend that you walk around the rear of the church, to see the incredibly tall windows. The Prague In One Day Sightseeing Tour features the Tyn Church.
