St John’s Co Cathedral

St John’s Co Cathedral has pride of place in central Valletta near to many of the other significant buildings in this purpose built city. It was completed in 1577 soon after the great siege and was built by the Order of the Knights of St John. Back then it was a basic church, but it was enhanced by each successive Grand Master until it became the treasure you see today. It was a demonstration of Malta’s dedication to God and its twin bell towers were designed to be seen across the island. You can get reduced admission to the cathedral by taking a walking tour which includes it. Prices and availability below…

There’s no doubt that the interior is stunning. When you enter the main worship area, it’s a feast for the eyes as you soak up a sea of ornate gold work, colourful tapestries and striking frescoes. It’s difficult to imagine how much money in today’s prices has been spent on this building across the decades. But it’s not just the main church, some of the later additions are also incredible, like the sacristry and the oratory (pictured below) which were built in 1604.

One of the most incredible features of the cathedral is the floor. What looks at first glance like an unusual tiled marble floor, is actually a collection of marble tombstones. They commemorate some of the most illustrious knights of the Order of St John, so you are literally walking on history when you visit. Each tombstone celebrates the fame, triumph, victory and death of its knight.

Our only issue with this cathedral is the admission price. Whilst most churches simply ask for a donation, visiting this cathedral is somewhat more expensive. However, the collections have to be maintained and you do get a professional visitor experience inside The price includes the audio guide. Adult admission is 15 Euros (2024 prices) but children under 12 are free. You can save money on your entrance fee by taking a Valletta Walking Tour. The cathedral is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4.45pm.
