Brussels Town Hall (also known as City Hall) is a stunning gothic building in the historic Grand Place. It’s really the centrepiece of this beautiful square and it has a long history dating back to 1401. It was severely damaged in 1695 but was rebuilt as you see it today. For all of those years it has been the seat of power in Brussels and still today houses a civic debating chamber (pictured below). It’s more like a palace than a council building though, with tapestries adorning many walls and sumptuous frescoes in some rooms too.

There are several tours you can take inside the Town Hall each focussing on a different aspect of it. We’d recommend the ‘Panoramic’ tour which allows access to several rooms and then the 315 feet tall tower. This requires a certain amount of stamina though with 200 steps taking you to the viewing platform. The views of Brussels are superb from this height. This tour is available at weekends all year around and is 25 Euros (2026 prices). Other tours allowing tower access include the Tower Experience which usually operates at Christmas time. If you’re not interested in the tower, there is a basic Videoguide tour for 13 Euros.

Of course, the best thing about the Town Hall is its carefully crafted gothic exterior and you can enjoy this without paying a fee. Look out for the many statues along the frontage. The Eastern wing is the oldest part of the hall including the shorter tower.
